After a comparative investigation of negation in German, Serbian and Turkish offering a number of new insights on mechanisms operative in all three languages, the position of the negator is discussed with reference to German and to languages generally. With reference to the analysis of universal interactive structures between negation and interrogation, the author discusses and elaborates on various descriptive approaches to the status of sentence modes, also providing empirical material culled from a total of 52 different languages.
